Cleaning tips

  • Placing door mats inside and outside every entrance to your home will help remove more of what’s being tracked in.
  • If you have pets, be sure to wipe off their paws before they re-enter the house.
  • Keep your walkways clean for everyone. Whether it’s with regular shoveling or stocking up on rock salt (protect your pets’ paws!), a clean walkway will help keep your home cleaner.
  • Institute a “no shoes in the house” policy whenever possible. Have family members to remove their shoes in the house once they get home and ask guests to do the same.
  • If you have a garage, use that entrance to minimize contact with snow and slush.
  • Have your carpets professionally cleaned. The winter is a great time for professional cleanings because dry air will help speed up drying time.
  • You can even have a protective coating like Scotchgard™ applied to help protect against stains without changing the look or feel of your carpets.

Cleaning tips

  • Place doormats at every entrance for a quick and easy way to prevent excess rain, snow, or mud from being tracked into your home. When guests arrive, they can wipe off their shoes so less mess ends up on your carpets. Mats with larger surface areas will allow for more dirt to be captured, so the longer the mat, the better.
  • Give your carpeting a good vacuuming the night before or day of your party.
  • Vacuum slowly to allow the suction to pull away dirt and dust.
  • Move the vacuum in a crisscross pattern to get deeper into the fibers.
  • To ensure that your vacuum is working properly, replace filters and empty the vacuum bag when necessary.
  • Don’t forget your stair runners and area rugs – clean and treat these just like wall-to-wall carpeting.
  • Schedule a cleaning for your upholstery so everything is nice and bright for the day of your party.
  • For extra protection, schedule a Scotchgard™ application to make spills easier to remove from your carpets and furniture. You don’t want to risk red wine staining your brand new white carpet!

Maintenance is everything

September 17, 2017

Don’t take measurements in your home thinking they’re accurate. You won’t see things that our experts will, like traffic patterns and incoming light. We know the best place to hide seams, how to prevent waste, and how to make your floors as easy as possible to maintain.

We want to make sure your seams are positioned under the furniture and out of major traffic patterns.

Looking to carpet your stairs? We can tack the carpet under each thread with a cap-and-band treatment. Or, you may want to consider a waterfall approach – the carpet would flow over the tread and onto the next step. It really depends on what aesthetics you like best. The waterfall installation is a more modern look and works best with smaller patterns. Cap-and-band looks a lot more traditional.

We always talk the exposed edges, turn them over, and tack them into place. If you have a short, tight pile, or want a more finished look, we can bound the edges.
Most importantly, we are responsible for moving furniture and removing any existing carpeting. Heavy furniture is easy for us to move because we have special nylon skid tools. Above all, clean your carpets every 18 months professionally.

We can take all the guesswork out of the equation for you with a consultation. Leave it to the professionals – we know exactly which fiber the carpet for your next project will need and how to best clean it.

Picking the perfect pad

April 19, 2017

Carpet pads make your carpet feel richer and more comfortable to walk on – and makes sure your carpet lasts even longer with the proper maintenance. You’ll have a much easier time cleaning a carpet with good padding because it enables the air to circulate through the carpet when you vacuum.

So, if you’re in the market for new carpeting, you’re also going to look at padding. If you’re not picky, go with prime urethane. Bonded or rebonded pads are made out of multicolored, polyurethane foam chunks and are the most common padding. They compress a bit after installation but stay resilient throughout use. If you have the budget, Natural and synthetic fiber pads will be your best bet. They’re dense and can withstand lots of heavy foot traffic.

Padding is important. Our experts will tell you when you need to reconsider your padding choice. We know whether your padding choice will damage your carpet or not. All of these paddings come in a variety of densities and thicknesses, and we know the best selection for your home. We want your carpet to stay strong and rich like the day you got it.

Just let us know whether your room will get moderate or heavier traffic and we’ll have the perfect option for you! There’s always a range of selections to choose from, depending on your budget and what you want your carpet to feel like.

It’s important to consider the weight of the carpet pile, commonly called the face weight per square yard of your carpet choice. The higher the face, the more yarn used, which means your carpet will last much longer – so long as you maintain it! Keep in mind that weight will vary depending on the fibers you choose.

Be wary of your allergies, too. You can always remove existing allergens by vacuuming your carpet. By doing this, your floors will last even longer.

The warranty of your carpet is the best way to know how long your carpet will last. Our warranties factor in the fiber, the style, and the face weight. Talk with us more about your carpet’s warranty so you know how to keep your home safe, clean, and looking good!

Once you know the type of fiber you want, it’s time to figure out the style of it. Carpets can be made out of fibers that are cut, looped or cut and looped. There may be several different subcategories of carpet styles – and all of them fall into one of these groups. Usually as the pile height increases, your carpet will become softer and more luxurious – and more difficult to clean.

Loop-pile carpets

Level loops and multilevel loops are considered loop-pile carpets. A level loop pile is usually tough enough for high-traffic areas. Mulitlevel loop piles have two or three different loop heights, which can create a patterned effect.

With loop-pile carpets, the yarn tips aren’t exposed so these carpets tend to work well in high-traffic areas, like your hallways and family rooms.

Cut-pile carpets

Velvets, saxonies and friezes are all considered cut-pile carpets. For formal areas, velvet piles will be best – they create a luxurious, level service great for a low-traffic area.

Saxonies are great choices for stairs or in hallways because they’re made of twisted yarns and have well-defined tuft tips – for the most curl and greatest resilience, go with friezes.

Overall, cut-pile carpets have a nice look and rich feel. They aren’t the most durable choice – unless you add a twist. If you need a heavy duty cut-pile carpet, ask us about our saxonies. And remember – if you have a velvet pile, you’ll need to get it cleaned quite often!

Cut-loop pile

If you want a combination of a loop-pile and cut-pile carpet, look no further! The mix of large islands of cut tufts and lower loop uncut tufts will hide wear and use quite well. Cut-loop piles are always great for your stairways, family rooms and less formal dining areas.

Facts about fibers

June 20, 2016

The fibers used in your carpet will determine how it looks and performs in your home. Fiber contents are usually listed on the specs sheet – it’s on the back of the carpet samples you like to feel! Don’t be confused by the dozens of trade names. Typically products will fall within one of five basic categories.

  • Wool is luxurious and best for heavy-duty performance. You’ll find that wool is much softer than synthetics. We think wool is exceptionally durable and offers your home great stain resistance! It’s not our least expensive option and we think it’s well worth the investment.
  • Nylon is almost as good as wool, without breaking the bank. You’ll get the same durability and feel of wool at a lower cost per square yard. Nylon is resilient, has excellent soil resistance and colorfastness. Our newer selections feature even more wear and stain resistance! If you’re in the market for it, we carry enhanced samples that have carbon-composite nylon filaments woven into the yarn that eliminate shocks.
  • Olefin, or polypropylene, is both water and stain-resistant. This makes it a good, durable choice for your carpeting, whether indoors or outdoors. Both our residential and commercial clients will be very happy with this choice! Olefin is best used in low-pile carpets to prevent it from matting or crushing.
  • Polyester, especially when used in a luxurious, thick pile, has a wonderfully soft texture. Color stays brilliant and soil stays out of your carpet. Polyester is a great choice for the master bedroom, where there is less foot-traffic.
  • Acrylic offers the look and feel of wool, at a lower price. This moisture and mildew resistant fiber is usually best used in bathrooms.

To provide the right feel, padding is sold in a variety of thicknesses, densitites and weights. Padding is important to protect the carpet from premature wear. Prime urethane, rebonded urethane, and natural fiber, are just some of the options out there – and buying new carpeting is more than running your hand across carpet samples.

When you get wall-to-wall carpeting, what you don’t know can definitely hurt you! Covering 300 square feet may cost anywhere from hundreds to thousands of dollars. Spending more money doesn’t mean you’ll get the carpet you need the most for your home.

You should know:

  • what makes a good carpet
  • which padding is best for you
  • what goes into a quality installation

Select function over form. You want a sample that meets your needs and style, that also stays within your budget. You may think the fiber is the sole factor in the durability of your carpet, but that’s just not true. You need to factor in style and weight to get the best carpet that fits your needs.

We’ll cover all about carpet fibers, styles, weights, and more, so be sure to follow us!
